IAEA Concludes Safety Review at OKG, Highlighting the Usage of Prexello – From the Press
From the press release “The team identified good practices and good performances that will be shared with the nuclear industry globally, including: […] a machine learning software to monitor turbine performance.” Read the full story at IAEA Concludes Long Term Operational Safety Review of Sweden’s Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant
What we’ve achieved
OKG, a Swedish nuclear power company, sought to improve the reliability of its Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) by better utilizing its data to monitor critical and non-critical equipment. To meet this goal, OKG adopted Caverion Intelligence AD, built on Prexello’s AI-powered platform. Prexello delivers the software’s AI and Machine Learning algorithms, web-based user interface, and advanced predictive models, allowing the plant to detect and address deviations in equipment performance before they escalate into serious failures. Caverion, by providing expert input, helps ensure the system is aligned with the operational needs of industrial sites, including strict safety regulations.
Since its implementation, Prexello has empowered OKG to proactively prevent equipment failures. The AI algorithms continuously monitor turbine performance and other critical systems, predicting potential issues well in advance. This capability allows the plant’s staff to plan maintenance effectively, avoid unplanned downtime, and ensure safe operations. The system’s user-friendly design makes it easy for OKG’s experts to collaborate across departments, analyzing real-time data to gain deeper insights into plant performance.
After the machine learning software, powered by Prexello and integrated into Caverion Intelligence, was implemented at OKG’s turbine, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted a Pre-SALTO (Safety Aspects of Long-Term Operation) review at Oskarshamn Unit 3. This reactor, located approximately 300 kilometers south of Stockholm, began commercial operation in 1985 with an initial design life of 40 years. OKG is now preparing to extend the operational life of the reactor to 60 years, which requires a comprehensive safety review.
The IAEA’s review mission, requested by OKG, involved a team of nine experts from countries such as Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom. The team worked closely with the plant’s staff to assess the long-term safety strategy based on IAEA standards. One of the key findings highlighted by the SALTO team was the implementation of Prexello’s machine learning to monitor turbine performance. The IAEA noted this as a good practice that would be shared across the global nuclear industry.
The IAEA review not only confirmed the safety and reliability of OKG’s long-term operational plans but also validated the effectiveness of Prexello-powered Caverion Intelligence in ensuring continuous, secure operations at the plant. By combining Prexello’s advanced AI capabilities with Caverion’s industry expertise, OKG has strengthened its ability to operate safely, predict equipment failures, and prepare for future challenges as they extend the lifespan of Oskarshamn Unit 3.
